FEATURES

Study English words in context

Keep the meaning and example together. Choose what to practise and where to study.

Meanings that fit the scene

A word can mean different things in different scenes. Scenelex considers dictionary meanings alongside the sentence and uses AI support to select the meaning that fits. You study the word with that meaning and examples of its use.

Choose words at your level

Select the word levels you want to study, from beginner to advanced (A0–C2). Words you’ve marked as learned are left out of new lists.

Examples from the subtitles

The card’s “From the scene” section shows the subtitle sentence where the word appeared. It is displayed separately from the additional example to help you recall the moment you watched.

Flashcard practice, your way

Swipe on your phone or use your keyboard on a computer. Words you’re still learning return in the next round, so you can give them more practice.

Study your cards wherever you prefer

Download your vocabulary cards to import into Anki or Quizlet. Choose PDF or Word to read, print or keep a copy of your word list.

FAQ

Questions about learning with Scenelex

How does Scenelex turn videos into flashcards?

Scenelex selects English words from the subtitles collected by the Chrome extension, based on the levels you choose. It saves them as a word list with a flashcard for each word: the word on the front, its meaning and an example on the back. You can also create lists from pasted text. The learning content is in English; menus are available in English and Turkish.

Can I create flashcards from Netflix and YouTube?

Yes. Scenelex Companion works with English subtitles on Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, HBO Max and TOD in Chrome on a computer. You need access to the video and an available English subtitle track. Scenelex does not provide subscriptions or access to these platforms.

How does Scenelex use AI?

Scenelex combines dictionary knowledge with AI support to select the meaning that fits the sentence. When needed, it creates additional examples and fills in missing card details; it also reuses existing meanings and examples. The subtitle sentence is shown separately from the additional example. The selected meaning may not always be right, so read it alongside the sentence on the card.

Do you store subtitles or the videos I watch?

We do not record video or audio. Collected subtitles are sent to our server when you start creating a list and kept temporarily for processing. Raw text is deleted when the job completes or fails; abandoned jobs are cleared within about two hours. Your lists retain the source title, video ID, cover image and example sentences used on cards. Our Privacy Policy explains how data is processed and deleted.

Can I study my flashcards on my phone?

Yes. Sign in to Scenelex in your phone’s browser to study your saved word lists. You do not need a separate mobile app. Collecting video subtitles requires Chrome and the Scenelex Companion extension on a computer.

Can I create flashcards for free?

Yes. Free includes up to 4 word lists per month within your usage allowance, with up to 50 words per list. Flashcard practice and exports to Anki, Quizlet, PDF and Word are included. You can try dictionary lookup and screenshot import once each. Longer or more complex content can use up your allowance faster.

Can I make flashcards from text or screenshots?

Yes. Paste English text into the web app to create a word list without the extension. Screenshot import is a Pro feature with a one-time trial on Free. For video subtitles, install Scenelex Companion from the Chrome Web Store.

Will my list cover the whole episode?

Not always. Scenelex only collects subtitles that the player has loaded. Some platforms load them in parts, so your list covers the text available at that point. More subtitles may arrive as you watch. You can check how much has been collected in the extension.
